Free smoke detectors offered by Galesburg Fire Department

Galesburg, IL (July 29, 2010) The Galesburg Fire Department has received a grant to install free smoke detectors with 10 year batteries in homes that have occupants ages 5 and under or 75 and older.  The “Assistance to Firefighters – Fire Prevention and Safety Grant” funded through FEMA by Federal grants provides for up to 3 free smoke detectors valued at over $60 be installed in qualifying homes. Installation of these smoke detectors will begin in the fall.

The smoke detectors will be installed in owner occupied homes or rental units by Galesburg firefighters who will offer information and guidance on other safety measures for the home and family including a home safety inspection. The installation, review and safety information will take approximately 30 minutes.

The Galesburg Fire Department is targeting 1,100 dwellings to be inspected within one year. This program has the potential to protect more than 2,300 lives and affects the most at risk groups – the very young and the elderly. The smoke detectors come complete with 10-year lithium batteries which further enhances the protection by eliminating the possibility of a smoke detector having a non-working battery. “The bottom line is we want at least one smoke detector going off when we show up to a house on fire. However, often times that is not the case” remarked Dan Foley, Galesburg Fire Department Captain.

For more information about this program and its qualifications, please call the Galesburg Fire Department at 309/345-3756 or email firesec@ci.galesburg.il.us .
